Why Are Fine Motor Skills Important?

From holding a pencil to turning the pages in a book, your kids use their fine motor skills as they are learning to read and write.

They use the muscles in their fingers and hands to grip objects, pick up small things like paper or crayons, and draw.

Developing fine motor skills is important for tasks that require a lot of control too.

How To Make The Bear Paper Bag Puppet:

After reading the book Corduroy by Don Freeman or your favorite book about bears, your preschoolers can begin making this craft.

First, they will color the bear and buttons if you are using the black and white template.

Puppet Craft

Next, your kids will cut out the bear’s head, arms, and buttons.

For children who need help using scissors, you can have them practice cutting the bear’s head (having extra copies is always helpful) and then help them cut out the other pieces.

Book Activity

After cutting out all of the pieces, your preschoolers will glue the bear’s head and arms to the paper bag.

They will then count out the number of buttons that they want on their puppet and glue them on.

Book-Inspired Craft for Kids

Finally, your kids will fill in the “The bear has _______ buttons” card with the number of buttons that they glued on their bear. They will then glue the card on their puppet.

Craft for Kids

If you want your kids to have different numbers of buttons on their bears, you can give them each a number to use.

After they create their puppets, your children can line up and put the numbers in order.

This Bear Paper Bag Puppet is a creative way for kids to work on number sense, fine motor skills, and much more!
