What’s Needed:
- 1 1/2 Cups of All Purpose Flour, divided
- 3/4 Cup of Salt, divided
- 3 Teaspoons of Cream of Tartar
- 1 1/2 Cups of Warm Water, divided
- 3 Teaspoons of Coconut Oil, divided
- Food Coloring – Red, Green, Orange and Brown
- Food Flavorings – Apple, Green Apple and Caramel Brown
- Measuring Cups
- Measuring Spoons
- Mixing Bowls
- Whisk
- Medium Saucepan
How To Make The Red Apple Play Dough:
To begin making this sensory play recipe, add 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup salt, and 1 teaspoon cream of tartar to a small mixing bowl. Then, whisk to combine the ingredients together and set aside.
Next, add 1/2 cup warm water, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, 3-4 drops of red food coloring, and 1 teaspoon of apple flavoring oil to a medium saucepan and mix the ingredients together to distribute the color evenly. Then, pour the flour mix into the saucepan and whisk until combined.
After combing the ingredients, place the saucepan on the stove top under medium heat. Next, stir continuously for about one minute or until a lump of dough forms. Then, remove the saucepan from the heat.
Next, allow the red apple play dough to cool for 5 minutes. With your hands, knead the dough for about 5 minutes or until it is soft and pliable.
How To Make The Green Apple Play Dough:
To begin making this play dough recipe, add 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup salt, and 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar to a small mixing bowl. Then, whisk to combine the ingredients together and set aside.
Next, add 1/2 cup warm water, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, 3 to 4 drops of lime green food coloring, and 1 teaspoon of green apple flavoring oil to a medium saucepan and mix the ingredients together to distribute the color evenly. Then, pour the flour mix into the saucepan and whisk until combined.
After combing the ingredients, place the sauce pan on the stove top under medium heat. Next, stir continuously until a large ball of dough forms. Then, remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
Once cooled, knead the green apple play dough with your hands until it is soft and pliable.
How To Make The Caramel Play Dough:
For the caramel play dough, add 1/2 cup flour, 1/4 cup salt ,and 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar to a small mixing bowl. Then, whisk to combine the ingredients together and set aside.
In a medium sauce pan, add 1/2 cup water and 1 teaspoon coconut oil. Then, add 4 drops of orange food coloring and 2 drops of brown food coloring and stir to combine the ingredients.
Next, heat the sauce pan under medium heat, stirring constantly until a stiff ball of dough forms. Then, remove the sauce pan from the heat and let it cool for 5 minutes.
Finally, knead the caramel play dough for about 5 minutes or until it is soft and pliable.
How To Use Caramel Apple Play Dough:
To make the actual caramel apples, gather craft sticks, an apple shaped cookie cutter, and a plastic knife. Next, roll and flatten out the red, green, and caramel brown play dough.
Using an apple cookie cutter, cut out red, green and caramel brown apple shapes. Then, cut the caramel brown apples in half lengthwise and place the upper part on top of each red and green apple. Finally, insert a craft stick into the top of each apple.
