Why Are Fine Motor Skills Important?

From holding a pencil to turning the pages in a book, kids use their fine motor skills as they are learning to read and write.

The development of the small muscles in the hands and fingers in coordination with the eyes is important in not only children’s learning but also in their everyday life.

How To Make Cardboard Tube Penguin Craft:

To begin making this penguin craft, your kids will paint the cardboard tube with the black paint.

Once the cardboard roll is dry, your children will cut a slit or two that is about one and a half inches long on the end of the roll. (They need to use the scissors with adult supervision.)

Next, your kids will put one end of the yarn in the slit. They will then begin wrapping to form the penguin’s scarf.

Once they are done wrapping, your kids will put the end of the piece of yarn into the slit. They may want to put glue or a piece of tape on the end to secure it.

Fine Motor Activity

Next, your children will trace the body template on white paper, cut it out, and glue it onto the cardboard tube. They will then trace the flipper templates on black paper, cut them out, and glue them onto the sides of the penguin’s body.

Fine Motor Skills

After gluing the body and flippers onto the cardboard tube, your kids will cut a small triangle for the beak out of orange paper and glue it onto the penguin.
