Pre-Reading Skills

Cat Sock Puppet:

One of the 5 Pre-Reading Skills that children need to develop before learning how to read is language skills. A fun way for kids to work on these developmental skills is by retelling their favorite stories using puppets.

Language Skills

What Are Language Skills?

Having language skills means that children have the ability to speak and to listen. In order to learn how to read, children need oral language skills and the ability to communicate so they can describe the things they are hearing in stories and share their knowledge and ideas.

How To Make A Cat Sock Puppet:

To begin making this sock puppet, draw the cat’s head on a piece of blue felt of craft foam. To create the head, draw a curved line at the top of your piece of felt. Then, draw a triangle on each side for the ears. Next, draw a line down from each triangle. Then, make another curved line to connect the two vertical lines.

After drawing the cat’s head, cut it out and glue it to the sock. Next, draw two of the cat’s eyes on yellow card stock. Then, draw a circle on the black and white card stock.

Next, cut the cat’s eyes and the two circles out. Then, cut the two circles in half. To finish making the cat’s eyes, glue half of the white circle onto half of the black circle. Finally, glue half of the black circle onto the yellow eye. You will need to repeat these steps to create the other eye.

Book-Inspired Craft for Kids

After creating the eyes, glue them onto  the center of the cat’s head. Next, cut a triangle out of the white card stock and glue it on the cat’s head for its nose. You can use felt, craft foam, pipe cleaners, or yarn to add whiskers too.

Finally, glue four buttons on the blue sock. After the glue dries, your cat sock puppet is ready to play with and can be used to act out the story.
