Coconut Tree STEAM Activity:
What is STEAM? It stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. STEAM activities blend these areas together and give kids the chance to gain and apply “real-world” knowledge. Through these hands-on activities, children learn how to problem solve, find evidence, evaluate information, apply knowledge, work with others, think critically, and much more.
STEAM activities aren’t just for older kids. You can do these interactive experiences with your preschoolers or kindergartners in your classroom or homeschool. This book inspired activity is such an easy and fun project for kids to do at the beginning of the school year.

As your kids complete the Coconut Tree STEAM activity, they will fill out their workbook as they work through the following steps:
Ask: To begin this book inspired STEAM activity, ask your kids how they can construct a coconut tree using the supplies.
Imagine: Next, give your kids time to experiment with the supplies and think about different ways they can build a coconut tree.
Plan: After creatively thinking about different ways to create a coconut tree, have your kids work together and discuss their ideas. Then, your children can plan how they will build a tree to hold letters and draw a picture.
Create: Your kids will follow their plan and use the supplies to construct their coconut tree.
Improve: Then, your kids can talk about how they can improve their tree and redesign it to see if it can hold more letters.
Share: After redesigning their coconut tree, your kids can complete their workbook and share their picture with their classmates or family members.
How To Do The Coconut Tree STEAM Activity:
There are a lot of different ways to do this STEAM activity. Your young students may need guidance to work through this activity especially if this is their first experience doing a STEAM project. These are steps that your kids can follow to create this book activity:
First, cut a paper towel roll down the whole length of the tube. Next, roll it so the tube is a smaller tree truck and place a piece of clear tape along the line that you cut. This is an optional step but it makes the cardboard tube look more like a tree truck and the activity more challenging. This is a great way to differentiate the project for older children.
Next, place the paper towel roll in play dough or other material that will act as a base. Then, use the hole punch to punch holes around the top of the paper towel roll. After punching the holes, put green pipe cleaners through them.
Finally, lace the pipe cleaners with letters and see how many letters your tree can hold. You can redesign your tree to see if it can hold more letters. For example, you can put the pipe cleaners through more then one hole and bend the pipe cleaners
How Is This A STEAM Activity:
Science: Talk about the different parts of a coconut tree and where they grow.
Engineering: Build a coconut tree that can hold letter manipulatives.
Art: Draw a picture of your coconut tree.
Math: Count how many letters your coconut tree could hold. After your redesign your tree, compare the numbers.
