If you are looking for fun phonics resources for your kids, this Dog Beginning Sounds Activity is “paws-itively” the best!
Reading activities like this one are great for preschool and kindergarten-aged children who are just learning letters and sounds.
And what kid doesn’t love dogs? So not only is this activity educational, it’s also super fun!
It’s important for children to learn the sounds that the letters make before learning how to read for a few reasons.
First, it helps them to understand that words are made up of smaller units called phonemes.
Second, it gives them the ability to begin “sounding out” words, which is a key strategy for beginning readers.
Finally, it helps to build their phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.
All of these skills are essential for beginning readers, so it’s important to give kids a solid foundation in letter sounds before they learn how to read.

How to Use the Dog Letter Sound Matching Activity:
For this letter and sounds activity, your beginning readers will select a dog and identify the capital and lowercase letters on it.
They will then say the sound or sounds that the letters make.
Next, they will sort through the doghouse to find one that has a picture that begins with that sound.
If your preschoolers and kindergarteners are just starting to learn the letter sounds, start with just a few letters and pictures.
When they learn those letters and sounds, you can add more cards every time they do the activity.
Your kids will continue to sort and match the letters and pictures until they have matched them all.
