Doughnut Shop Letter Recognition Game

Are you looking for a fun way for your kids to practice learning the ABC’s? This Doughnut Shop Letter Recognition Game is one of my favorites to play in preschool.

Learning the ABC's

Doughnut Shop Letter Recognition Game:

This letter recognition activity is a fun way for pre-readers to practice recognizing lowercase and capital letters.

You can have your kids work on one set of letters at a time. You can also mix the letters together and work on both depending on your children’s letter knowledge.

If your kids know all of the letter names, you can differentiate this activity and have them practice matching the letters or identifying the letter sounds.

What Is Letter Recognition?

Letter recognition is the ability to recognize and name all of the lowercase and capital letters.

Children who can recognize the letters of the alphabet can also distinguish between them too.

How To Play The Doughnut Shop Letter Recognition Game:

To begin playing this alphabet game, have your kids sit in a circle around the pile of doughnuts. Next, sing The Doughnut Shop Alphabet Song:

Down around the corner at the bakery shop,
There were lots of little doughnuts with sugar on the top.
Along came (child’s name) all alone,
and he/she took a (letter name) one home.

While singing the song, have one of your kids pick a doughnut from the pile and tell everyone what letter he or she picked. You can also say the name of a letter and have him or her find the doughnut with that letter.

Then, keep playing until all of the children have selected a doughnut.  Finally, you can go around the circle and have your kids say the name of their letter again.

Extend the Learning:

You can easily differentiate this alphabet game and create doughnuts with numbers, shapes, colors, and even sight words.

To make your own doughnuts, you can cut shapes out of foam depending on the concept that you are learning. You can then add sprinkles using glitter, puffy paint, or foam stickers.

This Doughnut Shop Letter Recognition Game is such a fun way for pre-readers to practice identifying and naming the letters of the alphabet. Hope your preschoolers have fun with this letter activity!
