Kool-Aid Play Dough:
So, are you thinking… what does play dough have to do with literacy? Actually, there are so many benefits to playing with play dough! By squeezing, rolling, and squishing the dough, your kids will develop their fine motor skills and strengthen their hand muscles which will help them as they learn to write.
You can use the play dough as a tool to help your children’s letter knowledge too. They can practice forming letters or writing the alphabet in the play dough using a pencil or craft stick. If your children are learning the letter sounds, give them a sound or show them a picture and have them write the letter for that sound in the play dough.
But, your kids can do these literacy activities using any play dough, right? Yes, they can but this recipe sensory-friendly. If you have kids like mine who don’t like the smell of the store bought kind, they are sure to like the sweet smell of this Kool-Aid play dough.
Getting Ready To Make Kool-Aid Play Dough:
What’s Needed:
- ½ Cup of Flour
- ¼ Cup of Salt
- 1 tsp of Cream of Tartar
- 2 Packets of Kool-Aid
- ½ Cup of Water
- 1 tsp of Vegetable oil
How To Make Kool-Aid Play Dough:
In a medium size bowl, add the flour, salt, cream of tartar, and 2 packets of Kool-Aid. Next, mix the ingredients together and set the mixture aside.
In a medium saucepan, add the water and oil. Next, pour the dry ingredients into the pan and mix well. As you cook it over medium heat, constantly stir the mixture until the dough forms. After the dough forms, use your spoon to fold the dough back and forth for about 20 seconds.
Next, remove the dough from the pan and let it cool for a minute. After it cools, knead it with your hands for a few minutes. If the dough seems a little dry add a few drops of vegetable oil and knead it.
This recipe is for 1 flavor of Kool-Aid. If you want to make more colors, repeat the recipe using additional Kool-Aid packets. After your kids are done playing with the play dough, you can store it in an airtight container or resealable bag for up to a few weeks.
