What Is Letter Recognition?

Letter recognition is the ability to recognize and name all of the lowercase and capital letters. Kids who can identify the letters of the alphabet can distinguish between them too. Using hands-on activities is an engaging way for pre-readers to practice learning the ABC’s!

To get this letter recognition activity ready for your preschoolers, click on the button below and fill out the form. Then, download and print the seed packet and seeds. I like to print my resources on white card stock, because it is more durable. But, you can use copy paper too.

Next, laminate the packet and seeds, so your kids can use them over and over. Then, cut the pieces apart. Finally, tape or glue the seed packet on a paper bag or cardboard box (such as a small tissue box) and cut the mouth out.

How To Use The Seed Packet Letter Recognition Activity:

For this alphabet activity, your preschoolers will pick a seed and say the name of the capital or lowercase letter on it as they put it into the packet.

If your pre-readers have just begun learning the names of the letters, start with just a few capital or lowercase letter seeds. You can then add more as their letter knowledge increases.

When your kids know all of the letter names, they can practice saying the sound that each letter makes as they put the seed into the packet.
