Valentine’s Day Comparing Sizes Strewing Idea:

What Is Strewing?

Strewing is leaving books, games, activities, and more in an area in your house where your children are going to discover and explore on their own. They will inquire, investigate, and learn as they play and using hands-on activities. Strewing is a simple and fun way to add more topics in your homeschool day and practice skills or concepts such as comparing sizes.

What’s Needed To Make The Homemade Play Dough:

  • 1 16 oz. Container of Vanilla Frosting
  • 2-3 Cups of Powdered Sugar
  • Pink or Red Food Coloring
  • Nesting Heart Cookies Cutter Set

How To Make The Homemade Play Dough:

To make the play dough, scoop the vanilla frosting out of the container and put it into a large mixing bowl. Next, pour one cup of powdered sugar into the bowl add about 5 drops of pink food coloring. Then, mix the two ingredients together. The amount of powdered sugar that you use will depend on the consistency of the vanilla frosting, because it varies by brand.

Continue adding a half cup of powered sugar at a time and kneading the mixture until it has a play dough-like texture. If you accidentally add too much powered sugar, just add a few drops of water to soften the dough.

If you don’t want to make your own play dough for this activity, you can use store bought Play-Doh. Try the sparkle ones- we love it!

How To Use The Valentine’s Day Comparing Sizes Strew:

After teaching your child about comparing sizes, you can strew or leave this independent activity out for them to play with and explore. For young children, you may want to start with 3 or 4 of the cookie cutters until they understand the concept.

Along with this activity, you can strew a few books. Here are a few suggestions of math books for kids about comparing sizes and measuring
