It can also be an enrichment activity for early finishers or a response to early intervention resource. You can easily differentiate this resource to meet the needs of all your learners!

What Is Letter Recognition?

Letter recognition is the ability to recognize and name all of the lowercase and capital letters. Kids who can identify the letters of the alphabet can distinguish between them too. Using hands-on activities is an engaging way for pre-readers to practice learning the ABC’s!

26 Capital Letter Seagrass Cards
26 Lowercase Letter Seagrass Cards

What Else Is Needed:

White Card Stock or Copy Paper
Scissors
Paper Bag or Cardboard Box
Glue

To get this alphabet activity ready for your kids, click on the button below and fill out the form. Then, download and print the turtle and seagrass cards. I like to print my resources on white card stock, because it is more durable. But, you can use copy paper too.

Next, laminate the sea turtle and seagrass cards, so your children can use them over and over. Then, cut the pieces apart. Finally, tape or glue the sea turtle on a paper bag or cardboard box (such as a small tissue box) and cut the mouth out.

How To Use The Sea Turtle Letter Recognition Activity:

To use this letter recognition activity, your pre-readers will pick a seagrass card and say the name of the capital or lowercase letter on it as they feed it to the sea turtle.

If your preschoolers have just begun learning the names of the letters, start with just a few cards from either the lowercase or capital letter sets.

You can then add more cards as they become more confident identifying the letters of the alphabet. You can also mix the letters together and have them work on both.

After your children knows all the letter names, they can practice saying the sound that each one makes or a word that begins with that letter.

This Sea Turtle Letter Recognition Activity is a fun, hands-on way for your pre-readers to practice identifying capital and lowercase letters! It would be a great addition to your ocean or animal units!
