Next, laminate the printables. Then, cut the puzzles out and apart.

Initial Sound Puzzles

You can store the puzzles in a small bag or box such as a pencil pouch or box for an activity that is easy to set up or take on the go.

How to Use the Watermelon Initial Sound Puzzles:

For this beginning sounds activity, your children will first pick a puzzle piece with a letter on it.

Phonics Activity

Next, they will say the name of the capital letter and the sound that it makes. 

Then, your kids will sort through the puzzle pieces to find the one with a picture that begins with that sound.

When your beginning readers find the picture, they will match the two pieces of the puzzle together.

For example, your students will select the letter “T” puzzle piece. They will then find the piece with the turtle on it.

They will put the two puzzle pieces together to create a slice of watermelon.
