Magnetic Letter Sight Word Stick:
What are sight words? There are two different types of high frequency words. First, there are words that don’t follow the phonics “rules” so kids need to memorize them. There are also words that are frequently used in writing so it is easier for children to remember them. That way, they can build fluency and don’t have to sound them out every time they are reading.

If you are using the Magnetic Letter Sight Word Cards, click on the link above or the pencil at the bottom of this page to purchase the resource from our Teachers Pay Teachers store. After downloading the cards, print them on white or colored card stock or copy paper. I like to print my resources on card stock, because it is more durable. But, you can use copy paper too. Next, laminate the cards so you can reuse this resource and cut them apart. If you want to keep all of the cards together, you can punch holes in the corners and put the cards on large rings.
How To Make A Magnetic Letter Sight Word Stick:
There are a few different way to make this sight word activity. To create a magnetic letter sight word stick, cut a piece of magnetic tape the length of a paint stick. If you have the self-adhesive tape, peel the paper off the back and place it onto the stick. You may want to add a little glue to the back to make sure that it sticks. For this activity, you can put the magnetic letters in a plastic container or pencil pouch.
I like to use the paint stick because kids can hold onto the handle of it. It doesn’t take up much space and is inexpensive to make too.
To make a magnetic letter sight word box, cut a piece of magnetic tape the length of the container’s lid. You can use whatever type of plastic container will work best for you and your kids such as a shoe box container or pencil box. Then, peel the paper off the back and place it onto the lid. Once again, you may want to add a little glue to the back of the tape to make sure that it sticks. For this activity, you can store the magnetic letters inside of the plastic container.
I like to use the plastic box because it’s easy to store the magnetic letters and sight word cards in the container for an easy, all-in-one literacy center that I can even take on-the-go.
How To Play With The Magnetic Letter Sight Word Stick:
After selecting a sight word card, your kids will read the word to themselves or their partner. After spelling their words, your children will write their words on the recording sheet for extra practice.
