Did you know that today is Scrabble Day?! We love to not only play the word game, but we also love to use the Scrabble letter tiles for many of our sight word activities like these Sight Word Secret Code Puzzles.
Sight Word Secret Code Puzzles:
What are sight words? There are two different types of high frequency words. First, there are words that don’t follow the phonics “rules” so kids need to memorize them. There are also words that are frequently used in writing so it is easier for children to remember them. That way, they can build fluency and don’t have to sound them out every time they are reading.
Getting Ready To Use The Sight Word Secret Code Puzzles:
What’s Included:
- 52 Sight Word Cards (Kindergarten Dolch word list)
What Else Is Needed:
- Card Stock or Copy Paper
- Laminator and Laminating Pouches
- Scrabble Tiles
To prepare this sight word activity for your kids to use, click on the pencil below to download and print the cards that you need. I like to print my resources on card stock, because it is more durable. Since these printables are in black and white, I like to use colored paper, but you can use white too. Next, laminate the cards so your kids can use them over and over. Then, cut the cards apart and store them in a resealable plastic bag or pencil pouch with the letter tiles.
For the letter tiles, you can order them on Amazon or look for Scrabble games at garage sales or your local consignment shops. You can also use magnetic letters, letter blocks, or other letter manipulatives. Your kids can also write the mystery sight word using a dry erase marker. The ways to use this sight word activity are endless!
How To Use The Sight Word Secret Code Puzzles:
To use this sight word activity, your kids will pick a card. Next, they will figure out the mystery word by identifying the letter that the first picture begins with and placing that letter tile on the card. Your kids will continue to solve the secret code by finding the letter that each picture begins with until they spell the sight word.
These Sight Word Secret Code Puzzles are not only a fun, hands-on sight word activity for your kids but it’s a great way for them to work on critical thinking and problem solving skills too.
If these tricky puzzles are a hit in your classroom or homeschool, try these secret codes for kids. Your students are sure to love them!
