This word work activity is a hands-on way to practice sounding out and decoding consonant-vowel-consonant words.

What is a CVC word? It is a three letter word made up of a consonant, vowel, and consonant such as hat, leg, six, mom, and cup.

When a vowel is followed by a consonant, it is a closed syllable and makes the vowel say its sound.

CVC words are considered the simplest words for beginning readers because each letter makes its sound so they can decode and sound it out.

    • o CVC words: cob, pod, log, mom, cop, pop, mom, top
    • u CVC words: hug, nun, nut, run, jug, cut, gum, tux

Reading activities

Then, laminate the puzzles so your kids can use them over and over. Finally, cut the pieces apart and put them in a resealable plastic bag or pencil pouch.

How To Use The CVC Word Puzzles:

For this word work activity, your kids will first pick a puzzle piece with a picture on it.

Next, they will identify the picture and decode the sounds in the word.

Your kids will then find the three puzzle pieces with the letters that spell the CVC word and put the puzzle together. 

Word Work Puzzles

If your kids are just staring blend sounds, they can work on one middle sound at a time such as putting all of the puzzles together that have the short /a/medial sound.

Literacy Puzzles

For more a more difficult activity, have your kids can work on more then one middle sound. It’s easy to differentiate this activity for your students!
