It’s National Pig Day! Have fun learning letters and playing in the mud (or pudding) with this Muddy Pigs Alphabet Writing Tray Activity!
Muddy Pigs Alphabet Writing Tray:
What are writing trays? They are a shallow container or tray and a medium such as sand or salt that can be manipulated to create letters, numbers, shapes, and more. Writing trays are a multi-sensory way for kids to work on letter formation, handwriting, and pre-writing skills. These interactive, hands-on activities help children develop and strengthen their fine motor skills too.
This sensory play resource can be used as an independent activity for young children in any early childhood classroom or homeschool. If you are a classroom teacher, this writing tray can used for literacy centers, morning tubs, or as an enrichment activity. For homeschoolers, try strewing this activity or include it in your morning basket.

To prepare this alphabet activity, click on the pencil below to download and print the cards that you need. I like to print my resources on white card stock, because it is more durable. But, you can use copy paper too. I recommend laminating the cards so you can reuse them if your kids get any “mud” on them. Next, cut the cards apart.
To get the writing tray ready, fill it with chocolate pudding. If you don’t want to use pudding, you can use sand, play dough, flour, cornmeal, slime, or cinnamon. The possibilities are endless!
How To Use The Muddy Pigs Alphabet Writing Tray:
To use this alphabet activity, your kids will pick a pig in mud card and identify the letter on it. They will then practice writing the letter in the chocolate pudding or other writing tray filler. Your kids can use their finger or another writing tool to form the letter.
Use this Muddy Pigs Alphabet Writing Tray to help your kids practice letter formation and writing. Stimulate their sense of sight and touch as they work on developing and strengthening their fine motor skills with this multi-sensory learning activity.
