Valentine Building Letters Activity:
Building the letters of the alphabet using crafts sticks is a hands-on way for your pre-readers to practice letter recognition and letter formation.
It’s also a fun activity for them to do to work on developing their fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination, and much more. These skills are so important for pre-readers and pre-writers who are learning everything from how to hold a book to pencil grip!
What Is Letter Recognition?
Letter recognition is the ability to recognize and name all of the lowercase and capital letters. Kids who can recognize the letters of the alphabet can distinguish between them too. Using hands-on activities like this one is fun for children who are learning to identify the letters of the alphabet!

To prepare this alphabet activity, fill out the form below to get the printables in your inbox. After receiving the email, download and print the Valentine letter cards. I like to print my resources on white card stock because it is more durable. But, you can use copy paper too.
Next, cut the cards apart. (There are two per page.) You may want to also laminate the cards so your kids can use this activity over and over.
For this activity, your kids will need to use both the regular and mini craft sticks. You can order either the colored or natural mini ones from Amazon or make your own. To make your own set of mini craft sticks, cut the regular ones in half. You will then want to sand the cut edge so it isn’t sharp or rough for your kids.
How To Use The Valentine Building Letters Activity:
To begin using this letter recognition activity, your pre-readers will select a card and identify the letter on it. They will then use the craft sticks to build the letter.
This resource can be used as an independent activity for young children in any early childhood classroom or homeschool.
If you are a classroom teacher, these letter mats can be used for literacy centers, morning tubs, or as an enrichment activity. If you are a homeschooler, try strewing this activity or include it in your morning basket.
This Valentine Building Letters Activity is a fun, hands-on way for pre-readers to work on letter recognition, letter formation, fine motor skills, and much more!
