Getting Ready to Use the Valentine Beginning Sounds Activity:

- 26 Jar with Letters
- 1 Blank Jar
- 132 Candy Hearts with Pictures
- Beginning Sound Recording Sheets
There are 5 hearts for every letter except there are 2 for the letter X. There are also 5 hearts that end with the letter X.
What Else Is Needed:
- Card Stock
- Laminator
- Scissors
- Copy Paper
To prepare this activity for your students, print the jars and candy hearts on white card stock.
Next, laminate the printables and cut out the jars and candy hearts.
Then, print the recording sheets on paper and make as many copies as you need.
How to Use the Valentine’s Day Letter Sounds Activity:
First, your students will pick a jar and identify the capital and lowercase letters on it.
Next, they will sort through the candy heart picture cards to find the ones that begin with that letter.
If your kids pick the letter Bb jar, for example, they will look for the candy hearts with pictures of a book, bike, bat, butterfly, and bee.
When your young learners find the five candy hearts that begin with the letter sound, they will put them in the jar.
They will then continue sorting through the candy hearts and filling the jars until they complete the activity.
Extensions and Modifications:
You can extend or modify this activity to meet the needs of your students:
- If your students are just starting to learn the letter sounds, start with just a few letters at a time. As they learn the letter sounds, you can add more every time they complete this activity.
- Put the candy hearts in a tub or container filled with rice, sand, or shredded paper to add some sensory play to this activity.
